Excellent Baking & Sauce Apple!
An ever-popular cooking, fresh eating, drying, and juice apple, Northern Spy is a larger than average apple with a deep red & green skin and red striping. Its strong, sweet-tart flavor and crisp texture make it an overall favorite. Harvest begins in October.
Discovered: 1800 Salisbury, Connecticut
The first seed of Northern Spy came from Salisbury, Connecticut around 1800, and it was first grown by Heman Chapin of East Bloomfield, New York. Introduced in 1840, it quickly became a commercial success especially in New England and in Canada even though it takes 6-12 years to bear fruit, and it is often a biennial bearer after that.
